Start with your family, not a feature checklist.
Is Looly the right private family photo-sharing app for you?
Looly suits families who want invite-only photo circles, EU-stored originals, no face recognition and a complete download when they leave. It costs €99/year or €12/month with 250 GB; invited relatives join free. The right private family photo-sharing app is the one your family can access, afford and leave with its memories intact.

What does “private” need to mean for your family?
Start with access: who can see the photos, who can invite someone else and what happens to a shared link? Then ask about the provider: original storage, processing, face recognition, training and authorized staff access. Different products make different promises under the same word.
Looly is invite-only and does not use your memories for face recognition or model training. It is not end-to-end encrypted. Choose a service with that specific protection if provider-inaccessible content is essential.
What should we test before inviting everyone?
Use a real family task instead of a long checklist. Upload a photo with a known date, ask a relative to join, add a comment and download the original. Check the date and file. Then request a small circle export to understand how leaving works.
Do this before spending a weekend moving your entire archive. The first ten photos can tell you more about fit than a thousand imported files.
When should we choose something else?
Keep your current app if everyone enjoys it and its privacy, quality and export arrangements meet your needs. Google Photos can fit a personal-library and backup job; its documentation includes Original quality. FamilyAlbum lists automatic movies and print-related features. A digital frame may be better for a relative who wants photos visible without opening a website.
This guide is written by Looly. It is not an independent ranking, and we have not timed relatives or run laboratory compression tests. The linked comparisons separate official provider statements from Looly’s own product details.
How much does a shared family space cost over a year?
Looly Annual is €99 paid once for the year. Twelve Monthly payments total €144. Both include 250 GB; invited relatives do not add a per-person subscription. Founding Family is a separate €299 one-time option with 100 GB.
For any service, compare the price your family actually needs, including the tier that enables the desired quality and downloads. Do not compare a paid all-feature plan with a free entry plan as if they were identical.
What to know before you start
Looly is not end-to-end encrypted. Originals are stored in the EU; processing and delivery can operate globally. Relatives must sign in. Android access is through the browser. Importing cannot restore quality missing from a source file. Recurring plans start with a 14-day trial, require a card and renew automatically unless you cancel before the trial ends.
